TODAY’S QUESTION

Mercy asks, “I have an interview coming up but have no one to practice with. Where can I find more mock interviews?”

Recommendation: depending on how long of a runway you have, this is how I would look for practice partners:

  • First, there is clearly a scale from least useful to most useful practice partners. Here’s how I would generally think about that scale:

    • Best: someone who works at or has worked at the company

    • 2nd best: someone who works in the industry

    • Still good: anyone in the commercial world who can understand the role

    • Nearly a waste of time: close friends who don’t understand the role or industry

  • Second, start by making it possible to get the first two. They usually take some time but send out 10-20 cold LinkedIn connections to people from the same school, country, or anything in common. Without something in common, asking them to mock interview you is a bit strange and unlikely to be fruitful.

  • Finally, what works well for everyone and is a wildly under-used tool is to record yourself and watch it back. I’ve heard the following advice for best results:

    • First, watch the video without sound to see how you look

    • Second, only listen to the audio to see how you sound

    • Finally, watch it all together with sound and audio

      • We’re all so self-critical that you’ll be lucky to find anything you did well by the third watch!

Conclusion:

Finding high quality mock interviews can be challenging when looking for a role by yourself. Recording yourself is always an option, no matter where or who you are.
