Victoria asks, “I’m getting more serious about applying and hear some friends sending 20 applications a day. How many should I be sending?”

Recommendation: your friend sounds like the type of savage I like! 20 apps a day isn’t for everyone but for some it totally makes sense. Here’s how I’d do it:

• In all honesty, how many new jobs per day are available in the region you’re looking at that fit both industry and role type.

  • For most candidates, it’s less than 10 and if they were to look at which they’re a good fit for, it would be less than 5.

• Second, be purposeful about your strategy. It’s likely that you’ll have to tailor your resume if you want a higher rate of conversations from application to interviews – that’s just the reality of the current job market.

  • For making alterations, I’m a big believer in the following as the most important aspects to alter:

    • Most recent company – description (don’t lie but highlight what’s relevant)

    • First bullet under the most recent company – make it look like you’ve had responsibilities that align with the job description

• Finally, create an application strategy that works best for your thoughts on the first two points – how many new jobs are there and how often do you want to tailor your resume.

  • I think the best strategy is to tailor your resume for the jobs that you really desire and are a good fit for. Make that an achievable number (3-5 per day for someone who’s looking full time) so you stack the odds in your favor that you’ll succeed and build momentum.

  • For the rest of the jobs that are available and are either somewhat relevant or somewhat interesting, just send your default application in. You’ll still capture most of the jobs available but not burn out in a week.

Conclusion:

20 apps per day is a lot but find the number that is right for the type of role you’re looking for and the amount of tailoring you want to apply.
