Project Overview
Prism Cameras: A hybrid camera that teleports your photos
Prism Cameras is an innovative AI-powered hybrid camera that transforms users’ backgrounds into fantastical scenes with filters like Sci-Fi, Wild West, and Anime. Users can personalize their backgrounds with prompts and stickers and print their photos into instant films. Targeting Gen Z and young millennials, Prism Cameras connects with their aesthetic and nostalgic preferences.
For this project, I designed the brand’s logo, packaging, and website to embody its unique essence and appeal. My focus was on developing three types of packaging that are functional, marketable, and eco-friendly, aiming to minimize single-use plastics and shopping bags.
Research
Turning Research into Insights
I started the project by researching the target market, competitors (using SWOT analysis), sales channels, packaging materials, logistics, and costs.
A key insight was that the target consumers value nostalgia, cherish making memories, and are active on social media. They also have higher disposable incomes, often due to living with their parents.
Ultimately, the brand’s target market is the Gen Z and young Millennials who enjoy embarking and capturing adventures and food trips with friends and families. Mostly, their salaries are highly expendable as they have little to no dependents and are currently exploring life.
In examining competitors, I found that most products are packaged in rectangular boxes, which felt generic and repetitive.
Brand Identity
Creating an energetic brand identity that capture life’s moments
Leveraging my research and the brand’s essence, I crafted a brand identity that encapsulates nostalgia, energy, and playfulness. The color palette reflects the brand’s innovative and tech-driven nature, while the typography reinforces its energetic and nostalgic vibe. The logo features an iconic camera shape with a “P” on top to represent the brand’s name, and a star-shaped counter to symbolize creativity and imagination.
Additionally, I developed a web design mockup to visualize how the brand identity would be applied across different platforms.
Package Design
An Eye-Catching, Eco-Friendly Package Design
After several sketches, I developed two types of packaging:
Camera Packaging
The packaging allows consumers to choose a Prism Camera with any of the three pre-installed camera filters—Sci-Fi, Wild West, and Anime. Each packaging variant visually represents the selected filter, enhancing the product’s thematic appeal.
SD Filter Packaging
These SD cards enable users to add more filters to their Prism Camera. The brand plans to collaborate with various partners to offer themed filters, such as Disney, Star Wars, and Nike.
The packaging features a custom layout designed to include a handle for easy carrying, aiming to reduce carbon emissions and the need for additional shopping bags. This distinctive and playful packaging aims to attract attention and enhance the unboxing experience.
To visualize the packaging design, I created a 3D prototype model using Adobe Illustrator to showcase its look and feel. Additionally, I printed the layout to ensure the packaging could be built and held effectively.
Reflections
Learnings
PrismCameras embodies the brand’s unique and quirky personality, and it was important to reflect that in their packaging. During the course of the project, I learned that:
