Project Overview

boz üy coffee: Coffee with a purpose

boz üy coffee is an upcoming coffee shop in Kyrgyzstan that aims to provide high-quality coffee drinks, celebrate Kyrgyz culture, and create opportunities for individuals facing life challenges. The brand is committed to cultural representation and social justice. Currently, the owner hosts pop-up shops in Vancouver to build a community of coffee lovers.

Our team was responsible for designing boz üy’s brand identity, including the logo, typography, color palette, and branded graphics. While I contributed to the logo concepts, my primary role was to develop the graphical assets that create a cohesive and memorable brand identity, enhancing its appeal to the target audience.

Project Results

A brand that inspires a community

Although the coffee shop has not yet opened in Kyrgyzstan, the owner is actively building a community among coffee enthusiasts through social media and networking. His efforts have been featured in several news articles and radio stations, gaining significant traction in Vancouver. Currently, he is preparing to release and sell coffee beans during his pop-up events.

Design Process

Logo Design

After our discovery session with the client, our team dove into researching Kyrgyzstan, focusing on its culture and history. We developed stylescapes to showcase our individual brand ideas, look, and essence.

The client selected a primary stylescape, and from there, we sketched multiple logo concepts, presenting ideas based on this direction.

My logo concept embodies the tagline, “Your coffee, with purpose. Your sweet escape.” It combines a coffee mug with a traditional yurt, bridging Kyrgyz culture with the modern world. The intricate pattern represents the brand’s dedication to cultural heritage and social entrepreneurship, while the mug with whipped cream highlights the brand’s craftsmanship. My final design is simple yet iconic, aiming to resonate with both domestic and international audiences.

Ultimately, our client selected a mascot for his final logo, designed by my classmate, Li-En.

Branded Graphics

From the final logo, I was tasked with designing and developing brand graphics to create a cohesive look that complements the logo and reinforces the brand identity. Drawing on the logo design concept and research, I created icons and patterns to be used across various applications, including business cards, packaging, and stickers.

The organic line pattern reflects the meticulous, handcrafted quality of the brand, while the intricate shapes symbolize Kyrgyz arts and culture.

Reflection

Working with Tolonbek was a pleasure due to his collaborative and passionate spirit. I was personally inspired by the communal impact we aimed to achieve both locally and internationally, showcasing his culture while creating a safe community for coffee lovers.

  • Cultural Sensitivity: Designing for a specific culture demands thorough research and collaboration with the client and cultural experts to ensure the designs are both respectful and representative.
  • Cohesive Design: Achieving a cohesive look that complements the logo without overshadowing it is challenging but crucial. It requires careful consideration to ensure all design elements work harmoniously together.
